Episode Three of Westworld’s second season, titled “Virtù e Fortuna,” revealed a new park—The Raj. It also took us to the edge of Shogun World. But more importantly, the episode gave us two more mysteries on Westworld.
Who Is The Mystery Woman?
It begins in Park 6, which we now know is called The Raj. Perhaps it’s not surprising Delos created a park where guests could pretend they’re back in Colonial India hunting endangered big game. It seems like Delos designed all these parks to bring out the worst in people.
The episode also introduced us to a new mystery woman. And I believe she may play a bigger role in the show than simply showing us how the Bengal tiger got to the edge of Ford’s lake in the season’s first episode. For one, she knows enough about what Delos is doing that she’s wary about sleeping with a host. She’s even designed a somewhat painful test to make sure her new lover is human.
Next, it seems she’s not in The Raj to hunt big game. Indeed, when her new lover asks if she’s here to hunt Bengals, she doesn’t say a word. Instead, her eyes drift to the little book she’s carrying. The book opens to a map with a symbol near the center shaped like two interlocking hexagons. It’s a symbol that’s eerily similar to one in the computer that Charlotte logs into in the underground (Drone-inhabited) lab in Episode One. Could she be looking for the same place as William and Delores? The Valley Beyond—the place where the weapon is?
My guess is she is. Which begs the question: Who is she?
One thought is she could be a spy. After all, if Delos is so powerful, it would not be surprising that world governments would be keeping an eye on it. Another theory, however, is that she’s William’s daughter. She seems the right age, and we know she long ago cut off ties with her father. And is it just me, or does she look a lot like the woman in the Times Square photo that Abernathy shows to Delores in Season 1? If it is her, then my guess she has more personal reasons for seeking The Valley Beyond.
One more thing, she knew enough about the park to leave the “guest experience area” when being chased by the tiger. She even looked surprised to see the lake Ford made, which should not have been on her map. She also survived the tiger attack, only to be abducted by members of the Ghost Nation. Which brings us to our second new mystery on Westworld . . .
What’s Going On With Ghost Nation?
Remember back in Season 1 when Stubbs tries to command one of the Ghost Nation hosts to freeze all motor functions, and it didn’t work? At the time, I figured this was the precursor to the uprising. Ford must have programed them to no longer obey such commands. But then last episode they disobeyed Maeve’s commands too. The season’s first episode taught us that somehow Maeve has inherited Ford’s seemingly godlike power to control the hosts. But why then could she not control the two Ghost Nation hosts they encountered last episode?
The answer may be that Ford has programmed Ghost Nation for some special purpose—one even more important than Maeve’s journey, which Ford also authored. While it’s pure speculation, my guess is that somehow this relates to the game Ford continues to play. Perhaps the Ghost Nation hosts are Ford’s special enforcers in his new game. So maybe it’s not a coincidence that these Ghost agents have now captured the mystery woman at the end of the episode. Only time will tell, but my guess is this all has to do with the Valley Beyond, whatever that may be.
But that’s it for now. I’m sure we’ll have more clues—and more mysteries—in the weeks to come!
